Virginia report provides insight to 2013 crimes in the state

Each year, the Virginia State Police release a report that shows what crime trends are doing in the state. The report for 2013 was just released recently, and the numbers show some points that might interest readers in the state.

One of the interesting points is that drug crimes have increased in 2013 when compared to 2012 by 3.8 percent. This includes narcotics crimes. The number of violent crimes, however, has decreased in the same time frame by 1.2 percent. This includes aggravated assault, murder, robbery and rape.

Interestingly, when you look at only the homicide rate for 2012 and 2013, the numbers remained around the same. In 2013, there were 3.84 homicides for every 100,000 people. In 2012, there were 3.86 homicides for every 100,000 people.

The number of property crimes, including larceny, also decreased by 3.9 percent in 2013 when compared to 2012. That was a larger decrease than the one noted when comparing 2012 and 2011.

Slightly over one-half of the 8,396 vehicles stolen in 2013 were recovered. Overall, the incidence of auto theft and attempted auto theft went down by 6 percent in 2013 from 2012.

There were 4,555 robberies and attempted robberies in 2013 in the state. Of those, slightly more than one-third occurred between 8:00 in the evening and midnight. Interestingly, the day of the week didn't have any bearing on the incidence of robberies and attempted robberies.

These statistics show interesting trends in the state. For the people who are being accused of these crimes, the numbers might not provide any comfort. They might, however, find comfort in building a suitable defense for the charges they are facing.
