Two men get 17 year prison sentences for theft

Convictions for the theft of prescription medicine from a pharmacy located in Boones Mill, Virginia, has resulted in 17-year prison sentences being meted out to two men. The defendants, a 31-year-old resident of Raven and a 29-year-old resident of Richlands, entered guilty pleas to a number of charges.

Both pled guilty to misdemeanor property destruction, breaking and entering, and grand larceny. The Raven man will be incarcerated for four years and nine months of the 17 year sentence, as well as paying $3,730 in restitution. The Richlands man will be incarcerated for four years and three months and pay the same amount of restitution. The court ordered that they both also undergo drug treatment during their sentences. A third defendant in the case, a 19-year-old female from Richlands, remains to be sentenced on her guilty plea on a grand larceny charge. Other charges against her were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

In instances where it does not seem possible to avoid a conviction, based on the strength of the evidence or other factors, a criminal defense attorney can still play an extremely beneficial role by exploring methods of mitigating the charges or punishment. Sometimes, entering into a plea agreement with the prosecution in which a guilty plea on some charges is entered into in exchange for leniency.

The prescription medication was purportedly taken during a pharmacy breaking last November in which entry was made into the business by breaking the pharmacy's front door glass. Police arrested the three defendants in a four-door sedan, approximately 15 minutes after they fled from the pharmacy. Police said that they were then attempting to discard bottles that the prescription medication had come packaged in.
