Herndon family robbed and abandoned at Fairfax business park

Police in Herndon are still looking for a suspect in the abduction and robbery of a San Moritz Circle family. The Thursday night robbery incident started just after three family members and a friend were dropped off at the Dulles Green apartments.

A man wearing a mask and gloves slipped into the apartment just after the mother and the family's two children, a teenage son and a toddler, entered their residence. The alleged robber then confined the three to a room and tied up the son.

As the family's male friend came into the apartment, the suspect sliced him with an unidentified sharp object when the man failed to drop to the ground. The father, who had been parking the car and was the last to enter, was assaulted. Reports say the masked intruder implied that he was carrying a gun.

The assailant ordered the family to their car and forced them to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. The father was told to get in the trunk. The male friend was instructed to drive to an isolated Fairfax County business park near Innovation Avenue.

Police say the suspect then freed all of the victims, except the father, and fled on foot. With the robber gone, the father was able to escape the trunk. The adults stopped a passing bicyclist, who called police.

Investigators believe the suspect chose the family at random. Neighbors told police that apartment residents normally used access codes and remote control devices to enter the complex, but a security gate had been left open for several days.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
