In some cases, drunk driving can lead to a host of criminal charges that can far beyond only a DUI or DWI charges. One man was recently sentenced because of a DUI crash that killed a man in February. In March, the man pleaded guilty to a second-DUI charge, a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and a felony DUI-related manslaughter charge.
The accident that led to these charges occurred when the man crashed his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado head-on into a 2007 Jeep Laredo. The accident claimed the life of the 78-year-old male passenger of the vehicle and sent the female driver to the hospital via Life Evac.
At the time of the accident, the man already had a DUI case pending from the end of 2014. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 85 of those were suspended, a one-year driver’s license revocation, completion of an alcohol program and $250 in fines.
For the criminal charges that were related to the fatal accident, the man was just sentenced to 10 years in prison with 5 years suspended for the manslaughter charge. He was also sentenced to 12 months for the DUI and 6 months for the hit-and-run. He has a $1,000 fine and must complete 10 years on probation, a mental health evaluation and a substance abuse evaluation. He also has an indefinitely suspended driver’s license.
