Alexandria teen charged with car theft in police chase

|

A stolen car, a police pursuit, tire spikes and multi-vehicle accidents recently led to the arrest of a 17-year-old Alexandria boy. The alleged juvenile crime took place on a Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 1 in Prince William County.

The teenager and a 20-year-old Mount Vernon man are in custody after police say the two stole a Fairfax County Honda Civic. The 17-year-old is charged with felony eluding, four counts of hit-and-run, grand larceny and multiple counts of attempted malicious wounding of a police officer.

The boy was accompanied by the older male while driving the allegedly stolen Honda. Officers investigating an unrelated Montclair robbery were notified of the theft by an automatic license scanner. The teen driver was pulled over for a traffic stop, but he sped off. Siren and light warnings by police to stop were ignored.

The car reportedly turned onto Cardinal Drive, where officers had set up strips of tire spikes to slow the getaway. At least two of the tires on the suspects’ car blew, causing the vehicle to strike another car and injure the driver.

The pursuit continued onto U.S. 1, where officers say the stolen car occasionally crossed into lanes of oncoming traffic. The car apparently struck three different police cruisers along the route near River Woods before coming to a stop in a cul-de-sac.

The older suspect is being held on $10,000 bond after being charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and stolen property possession. The teenager was placed in a juvenile detention center, where he is awaiting a court date.

Juvenile crimes are treated very differently than other crimes. Because of this, it is important to have a good understanding of your child’s rights should he or she be facing criminal charges. Fortunately, the courts generally view juvenile crimes as opportunities to provide minors with rehabilitation resources rather than harsh punishments.
