John S. Lawrence graduated from St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, in 1962. In 1966, Mr. Lawrence received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. While attending Rollins College, Mr. Lawrence was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa, the honorary national leadership fraternity. Mr. Lawrence attended Rutgers Law School and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1969. He was the editor-in-chief of the Rutgers Law School Transcript from 1967 through graduation. Upon his graduation, Mr. Lawrence was employed by the New Jersey General Assembly, legislative division. In 1970, Mr. Lawrence was granted admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. From 1974 to 1980, the American Medical Association employed Mr. Lawrence. There he served as the head of the legislation within its Washington, D.C. offices. In 1980, Mr. Lawrence began his private practice of law, gaining admission to the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia in January of that same year. For the past decade, Mr. Lawrence and Ronald E. Smith have worked together in the partnership of Lawrence & Smith, which has recently grown to Lawrence, Smith & Gardner. Mr. Lawrence was appointed by the Fairfax County Circuit Court as a Commissioner in Chancery, and continues to serve in that capacity. He is also an appointed Civil Marriage Celebrant. Mr. Lawrence has served the Fairfax Virginia Bar Association as Chairman of its legal referral committee, and has served on numerous other committees. Mr. Lawrence is a member of the Association of American Trial Lawyers.
